It was over 50 years ago that the National Benevolent Fund for the Aged took its first steps to directly improve the lives of older people who live in the UK. As we have grown from our beginnings in 1957, our core commitment to diminish the cycle of isolation, marginalisation and loneliness for older people has been maintained and continues to be strengthened.

Our three main initiatives are our Breaks-Away Holiday Programme, Pain Relief Machines and Emergency Alarms, all of which help to fight against isolation and make a real and significant difference to the lives of older people on lower incomes today. On our Breaks-Away Holidays, typically two coaches of older people on low incomes are taken, free of charge, to a holiday resort. Participants are provided with a re-energising change of scene, the opportunity to make new friends and the ability to return to their domestic situation more confident to face challenges.

A lady who attended one of our Break-Away Holidays said: ‘I am like a snail that has come out of its shell and for that, NBFA, I cannot thank you enough’.

Your help would be hugely appreciated by the older people we support every year. Seeing the difference our services make to their lives can be humbling, and is something that you could greatly contribute to.
