Sense
Part of Community Services, Disability
Sense is a national charity that supports and campaigns for children and adults who are deafblind. We ensure that everyone challenged has access to advice, opportunities and support so they can live an independent and fulfilling life.
- There are more than 28,000 deafblind people in the UK
- There are 2 million people with some degree of both sight and hearing impairment and this figure increases each year.
Sense is unique because it treats deafblind people as individuals. For over 50 years our services have been developed by an array of experts.
Our experts visit deafblind people and their families at home, offering practical and emotional support to families in need. Our Family Service provided 11,000 hours of hands on help last year giving support to mothers needing to bond with their newborn child and toddlers ways to communicate with their parents and siblings.
Our 18 Day Centres offer facilities for deafblind people to develop their skills, abilities, connect with people around them and have fun. Our Sensory and Therapy rooms stimulate existing sight and hearing, our Art Therapy Classes allow self expression. Other specialist activities such as a Hydro Pool and Horse Riding Stables offer experiences deafblind people wouldn’t normally encounter making the most of existing senses.
