The big purple bus that changes lives for the better

7 September 2012

A gift to Childlife is very special as funds are divided between its four partner charities, each one helping children and young people with major challenges to their daily lives.  One of the Childlife charities, the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) work tirelessly to improve the lives of deaf children and their families.

The NDCS Listening Bus brings National Deaf Children Society’ wisdom and experience to schools, colleges and clinics across the UK.  It reaches remote areas where families struggle to access resources and meet one another. And it provides the gateway to new technologies, new experiences and newfound independence for deaf children and young people.

Joanne and her son Billy were recent visitors.  Joanne was thinking about buying a radio aid to help Billy listen to music and the television. But the kit costs over £1,000, so she needed to know if it was worth it.  Listening Bus Assistant Louise talked Joanne through some cheaper alternatives – and showed how the ‘T’ setting on Billy’s two hearing aids could open up a whole new world to him.  Joanne was visibly moved when Billy tried out a set of music link earhooks (the equivalent to earphones) and immediately began bopping about, describing the music he can hear. ‘His face was priceless’ agreed Louise.

But it isn’t just about access to gadgets and gizmos. It’s about genuine expertise that helps families to make the very best of the resources available to them. It changes and enriches lives beyond all measure.  Thank you for helping.

Support the work of Childlife with an ongoing donation from pay.
