A few years ago, 51-year-old George had the worst Christmas imaginable. He started to lose his sight.
“I felt depressed and frightened, it was the worst Christmas ever.”
Instead of wrapping presents for his grandchildren and looking forward to enjoying time with his family, George’s deteriorating sight thrust him into a terrifying and unfamiliar world.
A world where his last refuge – his home – became a frightening and unsafe place to be. Without essential equipment, he couldn’t safely make a cup of tea or negotiate the stairs.
To make matters worse, George’s disorientation, and his home’s unsuitability for someone with sight loss led to a fall. His front teeth were smashed and he was left bruised and shaken. It was a miracle it wasn’t a lot worse. It’s no surprise the accident left him feeling unsafe in his own home.
Action for Blind People responded immediately. We made sure Social Services fitted safety rails and other equipment. We also made sure George received mobility training so he could learn to move around more safely and start rebuilding his shattered confidence. One of our Housing Co-ordinator’s has now helped George move to a bungalow, where he can be free from the fear of another life-threatening fall.
Sadly, there are many more blind and partially sighted people struggling to cope. They too are at risk in their own homes or facing other crises in their lives. By supporting Action for Blind People through workplace giving donations, you will ensure individuals like George get all the help they need to live safely and independently.
