Get a natural spring in your step

4 April 2010

RSPB-birds-wadingBoth us, and nature, have been waiting for spring for what seems like forever.

And if you love the natural world and want to get out in the countryside, there is no better time to do it than now, with your favourite songsters singing their hearts out in the trees and the colourful spring flowers carpeting the ground.

The RSPB is urging everyone to make the most of nature this Easter with a day on one of its nature reserves.  With wonderful wildlife on tap and leisurely walks at every turn, the wildlife charity defies anyone not to come away with a spring in their step.

And if you think you need binoculars, telescopes and khaki coloured clothing to enjoy the wonderful wildlife you’d be wrong.  Try some comfy shoes, a waterproof (they can’t guarantee everything) and some sandwiches and you’re set.

RSPB nature reserves offer great days out whether you’re a seasoned birdwatcher or a family with little legs that need to let off some steam.

Easter is the best time for beautiful wildlife and nature spectacles on many of the reserves and with over 200 sites across the UK there is bound to be one near you.

If you’re up north, you could experience the seabird spectacular at Bempton Cliffs or if you’re heading in the other direction you could lose yourself in mile after mile of wild and weird shingle beach at Dungeness.

If you want to stay central or aren’t going to be able to get out of the capital there are sites near you too.

Reserves in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland also offer breathtaking wildlife experiences so wherever you are, there is something on your doorstep.

And at many sites, when you’ve had your stroll and marvelled at the sights, smells and sounds, it would be simply rude not to finish off the day with an equally spectacular slice of cake at the reserves with tearooms.

Kate Humble, RSPB President, says: “’Nature reserves are for everyone, not just wildlife enthusiasts and experts.  Many have fantastic facilities for families and first time visitors to enable them to get the best possible introduction to Britain’s wonderful natural world.  And not all nature reserves are in the middle of nowhere; many are in or around our major towns and cities and are very easy to get to. So this Easter gather up your kids, grab your granny, round up your friends or strike out on your own and go and have a wild day out at an RSPB reserve near you!’”
