Exciting major breakthrough in epilepsy medical research

6 May 2010

NSE-ResearcherA worldwide research project, led by the National Society for Epilepsy and undertaken with 4,000 patients, has discovered a new hidden cause of epilepsy.

Doctors have found a missing gene which could explain why some people develop epilepsy when there is no other known cause such as a head injury or infection.

National Society for Epilepsy’s Professor Sanjay Sisodiya, head of the genetics research team, said: “This is a major breakthrough for epilepsy.  It’s an important finding which will help us understand epilepsy better and could point us in new directions which might eventually lead to much-needed new treatments.”

The study has been undertaken in the UK, America, Belgium, Ireland, Switzerland and Finland. Genetics is just one area of medical research which National Society for Epilepsy is leading in. Other than medical research the charity also raises awareness of epilepsy and provides information, support and specialist medical care. For more information please call 01494 601410.
