The Alcohol Support Group at Hamble Court in Reading is helping to rehabilitate those with alcohol problems in a safe, caring, and positive environment. The hostel for 35 homeless men and women (aged 16-65) has set up an initial 25 week programme that they hope to be able to continue.
The volunteers who help run the group are themselves recovering alcoholics and this gives those who are still drinking an insight into the fact that there is a life after alcohol and it is possible to stop drinking.
There are 8-10 residents who regularly attend the weekly sessions that involve group work around alcohol misuse and ways to cope with it. Subjects include the signs and symptoms of relapse, relaxation, trigger mechanisms, how to lead a balanced life, first aid and talks by ex-alcoholics.
One group activity involved cooking various foods such as savoury steak or rice and vegetable curry, which include the vitamins and nutrients that are often missing from the diet of alcoholics. Another group went on a treasure hunt walk and picnic to show that they can have fun doing other activities that don’t involve alcohol and where the only cost is a packed lunch!
Since the group began with funds raised by Church Housing Trust, a high percentage of participants have now reduced their alcohol intake and find the group an invaluable means of support, as well as a place where they can be honest about their issues and not be judged.
Church Housing Trust continues to support Hamble Court’s residents, providing funds for regular outings, activities, education and training, and resettlement costs.
