Terrence Higgins Trust
Part of Community Services, Medical
Terrence Higgins Trust is the UK’s leading HIV and sexual health charity. In 1982 Terry Higgins died isolated in his hospital room. No-one would go near him as medics had no idea what they were battling. HIV had yet to be discovered. Terry’s partner and friends set up Terrence Higgins Trust to raise awareness of HIV and provide support and information to those living with the virus to ensure that others did not endure the same shocking treatment as Terry.
Over 17,000 people have died from HIV in the UK and there are over 80,000 people living with the virus in the UK today. HIV is the UK’s fastest growing serious health condition with 21 people diagnosed every day.
Terrence Higgins Trust helps over 85,000 people each year. We offer a national helpline, THT Direct, which acts as a gateway to our other national services; counselling, peer support, legal and practical advice. We run education and awareness programmes aimed at various community groups to help them gain a better understanding of how to look after their sexual health. Our Fastest centres around the country offer quick and confidential HIV testing in a non-judgemental environment. We also campaign tirelessly on behalf of all those living with HIV to eradicate the stigma and prejudice which still surround the virus.
