Shelter
Part of Homelessness
Home is a basic human need. In our affluent nation, everyone should have a place to live that’s decent, affordable, and permanent. Yet millions of people in Britain wake up every day in housing that’s run-down, overcrowded, temporary, or dangerous. Many others have lost their home altogether.
Bad housing and homelessness can have a devastating effect on people’s health, personal relationships, and prospects in life. Growing up with no permanent home forces children to exist on the edge of society: anxious, depressed and often out of school. Shelter is a lifeline for anyone in housing need. Face to face at our advice centres, on our free housing helpline, and via the internet and email, we help more than 170,000 people each year fight for their rights, get back on their feet, and find and keep a home.
We also tackle the root causes of Britain’s housing crisis by campaigning for new laws and policies to make life better for homeless and badly housed people, now and in the future. Shelter is fighting injustice, and righting housing wrongs – and we’re achieving real, positive changes that will benefit generations to come. Our work won’t stop until there’s a home for everyone.
Just £10 a month helps Shelter build a better future for people in desperate housing need. Please help us.
