The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths is the UK’s leading baby charity fighting cot death. This is the biggest killer of babies over one month old and claims more victims than meningitis, leukaemia and all other cancers combined
FSID funds vital research, supports families shattered by cot death and gets the latest evidence-based infant health information to parents, carers and health professionals. Our work has helped save nearly 19,000 lives, and has resulted in babies now being seven times less likely to die suddenly and unexpectedly than was the case 10 years ago.
However, more than 500 babies still die suddenly and unexpectedly every year. We believe that as many as 40% of these tragedies could be prevented simply by getting our health advice to the most vulnerable parents. New genetic research promises even greater reductions. In particular, a cardiac genetic project investigating Long QT Syndrome (already a recognised cause of sudden death in adults) could lead to the UK’s first programme to screen babies for risk of cot death.
With over 90% of the £1.6 million we need each year coming from ordinary supporters, none of our work would be possible without the generosity of people like you.
