The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies.

We help vulnerable people in the UK and abroad prepare for, withstand and recover from emergencies in their own communities.

Our overseas work covers several key areas:

  • Emergency response to natural and man-made disasters
  • Disaster preparedness and recovery
  • Health and care, particularly combating preventable diseases such as HIV, malaria and tuberculosis, as well as social isolation
  • Promoting international humanitarian law
  • Restoring family links through our international tracing and message services

Our work in the UK focuses on four areas:

  • emergency response – we help people and communities respond to and recover from emergencies, such as floods and fires
  • first aid training – we promote life-saving and other humanitarian skills so people can be ready to help others in times of crisis in their own communities
  • health and social care – we help people during difficult periods of their life, such as an illness, bereavement or when family or friends are not able to provide support
  • Refugees and other vulnerable migrants – we help new arrivals to the UK and work to reunite families separated by conflicts and disasters
  • Promoting international humanitarian law

To many people who are poor, starving and suffering throughout the world, the Red Cross could be the only real chance of hope. Often we are the only humanitarian organisation able to reach people when conflict, famine or disaster has destroyed families and communities.

A rapid response to crisis really depends on the support of our donors, so regular gifts are essential to the British Red Cross and the people who rely on our help overseas and in the UK. By making a regular gift to the British Red Cross through the Workplace Giving scheme, you can help us to save lives when disaster strikes. With your support we can continue to be there, bringing help and hope to people across the world and here in the UK.
